Surrounded by Pines makes me dwell on Babaji–Feeling he is near
“Babaji’s spiritual state is beyond human comprehension,” Sri Yukteswar explained to me. “The dwarfed vision of men cannot pierce to his transcendental star. One attempts in vain even to picture the avatar’s attainment. It is inconceivable.” (Autobiography of a Yogi)
At a time when we can understand so much of the physical universe, God places the inscrutable before us to remind us of the greater mysteries—those things that defy the mind’s ability to take in. The fact that Babaji maintains his body for hundreds, even thousand of years is not his greatest mystery, and not the miracles he effortlessly operates, rather, it is what he has attained in his realization of the Infinite Spirit that would literally blow someone’s mind if they were to take an unprepared glimpse of it.
From the Autobiography we read:
“Opening the door, I saw a young man in the scanty garb of a renunciate. He came in, closed the door behind him and, refusing my request to sit down, indicated with a gesture that he wished to talk to me while standing. “He must be Babaji!” I thought, dazed, because the man before me had the features of a younger Lahiri Mahasaya. He answered my thought. “Yes, I am Babaji.” He spoke melodiously in Hindi. “Our Heavenly Father has heard your prayer. He commands me to tell you: Follow the behests of your guru and go to America. Fear not; you will be protected.”
After a vibrant pause, Babaji addressed me again. “You are the one I have chosen to spread the message of Kriya Yoga in the West. Long ago I met your guru Yukteswar at a Kumbha Mela; I told him then I would send you to him for training.” I was speechless, choked with devotional awe at his presence, and deeply touched to hear from his own lips that he had guided me to Sri Yukteswar. I lay prostrate before the deathless guru. He graciously lifted me from the floor. Telling me many things about my life, he then gave me some personal instruction, and uttered a few secret prophecies.
“Kriya Yoga, the scientific technique of God-realization,” he finally said with solemnity, “will ultimately spread in all lands, and aid in harmonizing the nations through man’s personal, transcendental perception of the Infinite Father.” With a gaze of majestic power, the master electrified me by a glimpse of his cosmic consciousness.”
We live in a material age, therefore we put great emphasis on the body; that includes the living body of Babaji. However, to merge into God means you merge into the Source of His eternal Being, and the inner Soul of Babaji. In experiencing your union with God you know Babaji, and Jesus, and the Soul of every exalted God-realized master. As Lahiri Mahasaya said, Why do you want to come here to see this bag of bones? Focus your attention upon the Kutastha Chaitanya, the point between the eyebrows, and experience me directly.
Where we are currently camped, we are surrounded by a forest of pine–Babaji said he feels most at home in the forests. These pines remind me of Dronagiri, where Lahiri Mahasaya met his great guru, and it seems I always feel close to Babaji in such forests, or when looking up at a vast vault of unobstructed stars. His beatific presence comes in an instant, lifting me into his purity and merging me into his spirit. What need do I have for more than this?
As I say, we put so much emphasis on the physical, but really, you have no where you need go, no one you need to meet, you have only to go inside with full awareness, putting your complete attention upon God and the masters and you have all you need, and all that you will ever need, right inside of you. Master made July 25 a special Babaji Remembrance Day, and this is good. And right here, right now, you may experience God and Babaji in full residence in your own heart and soul and truly remember him and be one with him on this Babaji Remembrance Day.
